During a Joyful discovery call with a client I spoke to a single mother and was looking for support from a Doula. The ONS (Office of National Statistics) reports that in 2021 51.3% women reported giving birth outside of marriage or civil partnership. In the UK there are many households that are centered around single mothers. Single mum's who are pregnant have the option to have a Doula as part of your birth support team.

While having a baby can be exciting, it can be quite a daunting and intimidating experience for single mothers. Doula's are a great companion to have to support you during your pregnancy, delivery and postnatal experience. At Joyful mothers we believe all mothers deserve a positive birth experience with physical and emotional support. As a trained Doula our job is to support single mothers continuously, this mothered-centred approach is at the heart of what we do at Joyful Mothers.
Women supporting women has been at the forefront in history and is still relevant now. The word Doula derives from an ancient Greek work which means to "serve". This is truly the heartbeat of a Doula to serve and ensure mothers are heard and supported as empowered individuals to make informed decisions that is right for them and their baby.
Here are 5 ways a Joyful Doula can support you as a Single Mum.
Having a Doula can help you to feel safe and empowered by having a trusted advocate who can play an active role in your delivery.
You do not have to do it alone. Numerous research has shown having a Doula present can mean shorter labour (who doesnt want a short labour?!), fewer complications, greater birth satisfaction and so much more.
Even though Doula's do not replace medical staff, Doula's are trained to provide non-medical effective pain management care to mothers.
Give you the ability to share your joys, fears, concerns without fear or judgement.
Provide post-natal support for those nights and days when need someone trusted to support you as you set into your motherly instincts and motherhood journey.
There are many benefits to having a Doula as a single mum and I want to assure you that as your Joyful Doula I would love to support you on this journey, you do not have to do it alone.
